Type
Garnets are a group of closely related silicate minerals that occurs worldwide, commonly found in metamorphic rocks. All Garnet stones have essentially the same crystal structure but with varying chemical compositions.
Colour
Due to Garnets’ different mineral compositions, they occur in all kinds of colours, such as red, purple, orange and green. In rare cases even blue. We sell dark oxblood red Garnet rings and necklaces.
Curiosity:
The English word Garnet comes from the Old French word Grenate – meaning dark red. A borrowed word from Latins Granatus, from Granum translating to grain or seed. A possible reference to Pomum Granatum (Pomegranate apple) whose seeds are in a cardinal dark red colour.
History
Garnets have been used as decorations since ancient times and are believed to have been one of the four precious gemstones given to King Solomon by god. A sacred stone to native north and south Americans. In Egypt, Garnet jewellery has been found in the Pharaoh’s tombs, treasured possessions placed on the mummified corpses to be brought into the afterlife. It was one of the most common trade gemstones in the late Roman empire, and signet rings with Garnet were used by the Romans to seal official documents. 500 hundred years ago large Garnet deposits were found in Bohemia, Czech Republic in central Europe. This lay the foundation of a regional jewellery industry specialising in Garnets with skilled craftsmen, reaching its peak with dramatic intricate pieces in the late Victorian era. To follow this tradition our Garnet pieces have a dark dramatic gothic vintage vibe.
How to tell if a crystal is real:
Coloured glass products can sometimes be sold as genuine Garnet, look for colour shifts, cracks, spots and inclusions in order to identify that you are buying a natural gemstone. Synthetic replicas are harder and heavier than genuine Garnet stone. The higher clarity the higher price, so be aware if you find a Garnet without imperfections at a low price point, this is most likely a synthetic replica.
