Crystal Knowledge Amber:

Type

Amber is an organic gem. Neither a crystal nor a mineral. It was once tree resin in a prehistoric forest, through time it has been fossilized and hardened, sometimes with inclusions of insects and plants. When you wear a Hellaholics sterling silver Amber ring, you wear an ancient stone. In order to be classified as Amber this organic gem has to be older than 1 million years!

Colour

Mostly Yellow/Orange/Brown, it ranges from white to a pale lemon yellow, to orange and dark brown (In very rare cases it can be red, green and blue). We sell a golden orange Amber.

Curiosity:

The Latin word for Amber is Electrum, meaning “beaming sun”.

History

Amber has been appreciated for its beauty throughout most of the history of mankind. Used for decoration, in trade and as a healing stone. It can be found globally but the largest deposits occur along the shores of the Baltic sea. The stone was a popular commodity within the Viking trade, which gave Amber its nickname  “Gold of the North” or “Gold of the sea”.

How to tell if a crystal is real:

Amber crystal is often replicated in glass or plastic. Genuine Amber is lightweight, has a wax-like shine, and feels slightly warm to the touch, hence can for the untrained eye be mistaken for plastic. But unlike plastic, it will not have a high gloss shine or a glittering surface. Faux Amber made of glass feels cooler to the touch and is both harder and heavier than genuine stone. We sell genuine Amber from certified suppliers.

Good to know:

Amber is an eternal time capsule, with inclusions of flower parts, leaves, insects and/or gas baubles. A reminder of life on earth millions of years ago. It is therefore common with colour variations, “spots” and markings within the stone making each piece unique.

Birthstone:

Amber is not a traditional birthstone.

Zodiac Crystal:

Amber is not a traditional zodiac stone but is associated with the astrology sign Taurus.

Amber necklaces, Amber earrings, Amber rings and Amber amulets, often in sterling silver were popular commodities within the Viking Jewellery trade, which gave Amber its nickname “Gold of the North” or “Gold of the sea”.
