Crystal Knowledge Labradorite:

Type

Labradorite, also called Spectrolite is a colour-changing feldspar, a sodium calcium aluminium silicate with a spellbinding optical effect called Labradorescence.

Colour

Dark green, grey-green, blue, yellow, lilac, brown. We sell dark green and blue/brown Labradorite.

Curiosity:

In Inuit Mythology Labradorite is believed to be frozen fire that fell from Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), a notion easy to see as both the Northern Lights and Labradorite can display a spellbinding kaleidoscope of colours.

History

The red paint people of Maine, a stone-age civilisation dating 1000 BCE to 400 BCE used Labradorite in rituals over 1000 years ago. For many Inuits, Labradorite is a sacred stone of large mythical importance. The gemstone was introduced to Europe in 1770 after a specimen was sent from Labrador in Canada to London by a Moravian Missionary, hence getting its name from the Labrador province. During the second world war in the 1940s spectacular Labradorite of very high quality displaying all colours in the spectrum was discovered in Finland. This Finnish Labradorite is referred to as Spectrolite, a name that now is often used as a reference for Labradorite of high value with a rainbow of colours.

How to tell if a crystal is real:

Authentic natural Labradorite will often look bland on one side and once the angle changes it will display a plectrum of eye-catching colours. Fake replicas are constantly colourful at all angles.

Good to know:

Labradorites are vulnerable to scratching and may chip or crack if hit against a hard surface. Handle your Labradorite jewellery, particularly Labradorite rings with care.

Birthstone:

Labradorite is not a traditional birthstone.

Zodiac Crystal:

Labradorite is not a traditional zodiac stone.
