Crystal Knowledge Amethyst:

Type

Purple Amethyst is a semi-precious gemstone, a purple variety of quartz found in large hollow crystal-lined rocks called geodes. Its purple colour is the result of traces of Iron and exposure to low-level natural radiation. The stone itself is not radioactive in any way. The levels of exposure and Iron traces decide the shade of purple.

Colour

May be transparent or opaque, its natural colour varies from light fair purple with pink tones to a deep rich dark purple colour.

Curiosity:

For centuries Amethyst jewellery came at a high price point, equally as rare and expensive as Ruby and Emerald. A stone for royals. This changed in the early 1900s when large deposits of this purple gem were discovered in Brazil. Now you can get a high-quality sterling silver amethyst ring at an affordable price point.

History

Amethyst geodes were one of the first gemstones to be mined, and it has been used worldwide as adornments for thousands of years. From the people in old Egypt, the Aztecs and Incas to Native North Americans and Ancient Persia and China. Amethysts are sacred to Buddhist Tibetans. The Greeks and Romans used it both in their homes and as jewellery. During the Middle Ages, it was seen as a symbol of royalty and used to decorate English regalia.

How to tell if a crystal is real:

Be aware of stones that have a solid even colour, they may very well be fake plastic or glass replicas. Genuine Amethyst stones come in different shades of purple and often have some small imperfections. If the claimed Amethyst crystal has bubbles below the surface you can tell that it’s fake and a glass replica, genuine Amethyst stone may have impurities but no bubbles.

How to care for your crystal:

Prolonged exposure to light sources can change the colour of the crystal. Store your Amethyst necklaces, Amethyst earrings and Amethyst rings in a dark place, for example in the provided pouches or in a jewellery organizer. Avoid wearing your crystal jewellery several days in a row during the summer season.

Birthstone:

Amethyst is the birthstone for February.

Zodiac Crystal:

Amethyst is the zodiac stone for the sign Pisces.
