History

Garnets have been used as decorations since ancient times and are believed to have been one of the four precious gemstones given to King Solomon by god. A sacred stone to native north and south Americans. In Egypt, Garnet jewellery has been found in the Pharaoh’s tombs, treasured possessions placed on the mummified corpses to be brought into the afterlife. It was one of the most common trade gemstones in the late Roman empire, and signet rings with Garnet were used by the Romans to seal official documents. 500 hundred years ago large Garnet deposits were found in Bohemia, Czech Republic in central Europe. This lay the foundation of a regional jewellery industry specialising in Garnets with skilled craftsmen, reaching its peak with dramatic intricate pieces in the late Victorian era. How to tell if a crystal is real:

Coloured glass products can sometimes be sold as genuine Garnet, look for colour shifts, cracks, spots and inclusions in order to identify that you are buying a natural gemstone. Synthetic replicas are harder and heavier than genuine Garnet stone. The higher clarity the higher price, so be aware if you find a Garnet without imperfections at a low price point, this is most likely a synthetic replica.
