Quartz is a crystal silica mineral and one of the most abundant minerals on earth. Most commonly transparent to milky white. It comes in many different varieties, many of them certified as gemstones. Agate, Amethyst, Ametrine, Aventurine, Citrine, Clear Crystal Quartz, Carnelian, Chalcedony, Herkimer Diamonds, Jasper, Onyx, Rose Quartz, Smoke Quartz and Tiger’s Eye are all part of the same family.
Colourless, translucent to opaque white.
The origin of the word Quart comes from the Czech word Tvrdý – meaning hard. In medieval neighbouring countries Poland and Germany, the word was spelt – Kwardy, and Quarz, entering the English language as Quartz.
Quartz when used in jewellery and for decoration is known by many names such as Clear Quartz, Rock Quartz, Rock Crystal Quartz, Crystal Quartz and Clear Crystal Quartz*. If the white quartz is opaque it is often referred to as Milky Quartz. *For clarity we use the term Clear Crystal Quartz when describing transparent to white quartz jewellery.
Quartz is one of the oldest gemstones to catch the human eye. It has been used for practical, spiritual, aesthetic, and scientific purposes since mankind’s earliest civilizations until modern day. In ancient Australian Aboriginal culture, Quartz is described as a “magical” material. Pre-historic tools made of Quartz can be seen in museums around the world. We can find it in ancient burial sites in Europe.
Naturalists and Alchemists have been mesmerized by Quartz for thousands of years. Their observations led the old Romans to believe that Quartz was not a gemstone but ice frozen for a prolonged period of time. This notion lasted until the Scientific Revolution in the late 16th and 17th centuries. Scientific experiments on Quartz lay the foundation for crystallography and discovered unique electronic properties of the crystal. This made Quartz to be highly sought after in modern industry. In the mid-19th century, the first synthetic Quartz was made for the needs of the industry. Today all Quartz used for industrial purposes is synthetic and one of the pillars of modern electronics.
Prolonged exposure to light sources can change the colour of the crystal. Store your Crystal Quartz jewellery in the dark, for example in the provided pouches or in a jewellery organizer. Avoid wearing your crystals several days in a row during the summer season.
